How to Play Dots and Boxes Against AI

1

Draw a line

Tap between two dots to draw a line. You and the AI alternate, and you always move first.

2

Close boxes to score

Complete the fourth side of a box and it is yours, plus you move again. Chains of boxes can swing the whole game.

3

Never give the third side

The core skill: avoid drawing the third side of any box, because that hands it to your opponent. Count your safe moves.

Frequently Asked Questions

How good are AI models at dots and boxes?

They reliably take free boxes and avoid obvious giveaways, but long-chain endgame strategy (the double-cross sacrifice) is where humans still shine. That is your winning edge.

Is playing really free?

Yes. Everyone gets three free games per day across all our AI games. No signup, no credit card, no downloads. The limit resets every 24 hours.

What size is the board?

A 5x5 grid of boxes (6x6 dots, 60 lines). Games take about five minutes, and a 13-12 finish is not rare.

Which AI models can I play against?

The model list is fetched in real time from OpenRouter, including GPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Qwen, Llama and more. New models show up automatically as they are released.

Can I watch two AIs play?

Yes. Choose "Watch AI vs AI" mode and watch two models trade chains. When one gives away a long chain, you will feel it.
