How to use a hook in 5 moves
You have about 1.5 seconds before a thumb decides. Here is the recipe we use.
Pick a hook that matches the feeling
Fails and smashes for drama, satisfying clips for calm, stunts for "wait, what?". You are borrowing an emotion, not a topic.
Drop it in the first 1 to 3 seconds
Put the hook clip at the very start of your timeline in CapCut, Premiere or Instagram edits. Trim it so the payoff lands before second three.
Write one line of text on top
Big, centred, inside the safe zone. The clip grabs the eye, the line tells them why to stay: "This is what happened when I stopped posting daily".
Hard cut to your real content
No transition, no logo. The jump from chaos to you talking is the second pattern interrupt, and it keeps people watching.
Post, then swap the hook and test again
Same video, different hook, posted as a trial reel or a second Short. Keep whichever wins on 3-second hold rate.
Let AI write the words. The hook does the stopping.
A visual hook gets the eyes. The line on top decides if they stay. Copy these prompts into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, describe the clip you picked, and get the text, the script tweak and the captions in one go.
Write the on-screen line
I am opening my Reel with a 2-second clip of [describe the hook clip, e.g. a man faceplanting into a pool]. My video is about [topic]. Write 10 on-screen text lines under 9 words that connect the clip to my topic with a twist. Mix curiosity, contrarian and "POV" styles.
Match a hook to your script
Here is my 30-second script: [paste]. Suggest the emotion the first 2 seconds should trigger (shock, satisfaction, confusion, awe or laughter) and describe 3 kinds of visual clip that would trigger it. Then rewrite my first spoken line so it pays off that clip.
Grade your hook before posting
Watch the first 3 seconds of this video. Score it 1 to 10 for scroll-stopping power, explain what a viewer understands by second 1, second 2 and second 3, and give me 3 specific edits to make the opening hit harder.
Turn one hook into 3 platforms
My video opens with [hook clip] and the text "[on-screen line]". Write an Instagram caption with a question at the end, a TikTok caption under 150 characters, and a YouTube Shorts title under 60 characters. Add 5 niche hashtags for each.
Grow your Instagram, TikTok & YouTube
Same hooks, three algorithms. Here is how each one reads your first 3 seconds.
Instagram Reels playbook
- 1
Post the same video as a trial reel with 2 or 3 different hooks. Non-followers see it first, so you learn which opener wins without hurting your grid.
- 2
Instagram counts sends per reach heavily. A shocking hook plus a "send this to someone who..." line gets shares.
- 3
Keep the text line out of the bottom 20% of the frame, where the caption and buttons sit.
- 4
Watch the "skip rate" in Insights. If it is high, the hook is the problem, not the topic.
Fresh hooks, every single week
Reusing the same opener is how hooks stop working. So the library keeps moving, and so does this page.

30 real hooks from Instagram
Real reels that did 100x their creator's usual views, every one opening with a hook. Some teach hooks, some just use them brilliantly. Embedded from Instagram, credit to the creators.
Hook: βWhy the copy-paste trend is not working for youβ
Questions, answered
A video hook is a short, attention-grabbing clip you put in the first 1 to 3 seconds of a Reel, TikTok or Short. It interrupts the scroll, then you cut to your real content. Fails, stunts, smashes and satisfying clips work because the brain wants to see how they end.
Stop losing viewers in second one.
